The Gospel of Luke

Chapter 1

Two impossible pregnancies. Two revolutionary songs. The story begins.

Luke 1-4

Why I'm Writing This

Why I'm Writing This
Many have already tried to put together an account of the events that have been fulfilled among us — just as they were handed down to us by those who were eyewitnesses from the beginning and became servants of this message.

So I too decided, after carefully investigating everything from the start, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus — so you can be certain about the things you've been taught.

Luke 5-25

An Old Priest, an Empty Nursery

An Old Priest, an Empty Nursery
In the days when Herod was king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah. His wife Elizabeth was also from a priestly family — a descendant of Aaron. Both of them lived in a way that pleased God. They followed all the Lord's commands and regulations — no one could find fault with them. But they had no children. Elizabeth was barren— and in their world, that word fell like a verdict. The neighbors whispered that God had forgotten her. Both were old now. Too old for hope.

One day Zechariah was serving as priest before God — his division was on duty. According to custom, he was chosen by lot to enter the sanctuary and burn incense— an honor that came to most priests only once in a lifetime. Outside, the whole crowd was praying.

And there he was — an angel of the Lord. Standing at the right side of the incense altar— the place of blessing. When Zechariah saw him, he was shaken to his core. Fear fell on him.

The angel said: "Don't be afraid, Zechariah. Your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son. You are to name him John. You will have joy and gladness — overwhelming happiness. Many will rejoice at his birth. He will be great in God's sight. He must never drink wine or strong drink. Even before he's born, he will be filled with the Holy Spirit. He will turn many of Israel's people back to the Lord their God. He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah — to turn the hearts of parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to prepare a people ready for the Lord."

Zechariah asked: "How can I be sure of this? I'm an old man, and my wife is getting on in years too."

The angel answered: "I am Gabriel. I stand in the very presence of God. He sent me to bring you this good news. But because you didn't believe my words — which will come true at their proper time — you will be silent. You won't be able to speak until all this happens."

Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah, wondering why he was taking so long. When he came out, he couldn't speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision. He kept making signs but remained unable to speak.

When his time of service was completed, he went home.

Soon after, Elizabeth became pregnant. For five months she stayed in seclusion. She said: "This is what the Lord has done for me. He has looked on me and taken away my disgrace among the people."

Mary Says Yes

Mary Says Yes
In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel again. This time not to the magnificent temple in Jerusalem, but to Nazareth— an insignificant village in Galilee that didn't appear on any map. He went to a young woman named Mary. She was pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David.

The angel came to her and said: "Greetings, you whom God has graced! The Lord is with you." The words shook her. She wondered what kind of greeting this could be.

The angel said: "Don't be afraid, Mary. God has chosen you. You will conceive and give birth to a son. You are to name him Jesus. He will be great — he will be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom will never end."

Mary asked: "How can this happen? I've never been with a man."

The angel answered: "The Holy Spirit will come upon you. The power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. And here's more: Your relative Elizabeth — the one everyone said couldn't have children — she is six months pregnant. At her age! For nothing is impossible with God."

Mary said: "I belong to God. I'm ready. Let what you've said happen to me."

Then the angel left.

Two Women, Two Miracles

Two Women, Two Miracles
In those days Mary set out and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea. She entered Zechariah's home and greeted Elizabeth.

When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped inside her. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. She shouted: "Blessed are you among women! And blessed is the child you carry! Why am I so honored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? The moment I heard your greeting, the baby in my womb leaped for joy! Blessed is she who believed. What the Lord has spoken to her will be fulfilled."

Mary's Song

Mary's Song
Mary said:"Everything in me celebrates God.
My spirit bursts with joyover God my Savior.
He has looked on me —me, the insignificant one, his servant. From now on, every generation will call me blessed.
The Mighty One has done great things for me.Holy is his name.
His mercy extends to those who honor him, from generation to generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm.He has scattered the arrogant, driven them apart in the pride of their hearts.
He has pulled the powerful from their thronesand lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good thingsand sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel, remembering his mercy —
just as he promised our ancestors:to Abraham and his descendants forever."

Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months. Then she returned home.

Luke 57-66

The Birth of John

The Birth of John
The time came for Elizabeth to have her baby, and she gave birth to a son.

Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy. They celebrated with her.

On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child. They were going to name him Zechariah, after his father. But his mother said: "No. He is to be called John." They objected: "But no one in your family has that name!"

They made signs to his father, asking what he wanted to name the child. He asked for a writing tablet and wrote: "His name is John."

Everyone was amazed.

Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue was freed. He began to speak, praising God.

Awe came over everyone in the neighborhood. Throughout the hill country of Judea, people talked about these events. Everyone who heard wondered: "What will this child become?"

For it was clear: the Lord's hand was with him.

Zechariah's Song

Zechariah's Song
His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:
"Praise the Lord, the God of Israel! He has come to his peopleand set them free.
He has raised up a mighty savior for usfrom the house of his servant David.
This is what he promised long ago through his holy prophets:
salvation from our enemies, from the hand of all who hate us.
He has shown mercy to our ancestorsand remembered his holy covenant —
the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
to rescue us from the hand of our enemiesso we can serve him without fear,
in holiness and righteousness before himall our days.
And you, child —you will be called a prophet of the Most High. You will go before the Lordto prepare his way,
to give his people knowledge of salvationthrough the forgiveness of their sins.
All this because of the deep mercy of our God,by which the dawn from heaven will visit us —
to shine on those sitting in darkness,in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace."
